FAQ's

What is a Kodama, what is a zome?
In Japanese folklore, a Kodama is a tree spirit. The presence of kodamas shows that a forest is healthy.
How heavy are they? How much weight can they hold?
By itself, the Hanging Lounger Zome weighs about 110 lbs and has a rated load limit of 600 lbs. The redundant structural design ensures that the load is spread to many supports and the factor of safety used in design exceeds standard practices. All of the hardware is oversized and made of grade 316 marine grade stainless steel.
Won't I get dizzy or seasick?
The 360 degree pendulum motion of the Kodama Zome is quite different from that of a swing, hammock, or boat. It creates a sense of equilibrium and stability for the body. Unlike the erratic or jolty movement of many swings, beds hung from multiple points and waterbeds that can make one feel uneasy and even sea-sick, the Kodama Zomes motion provides a calming rocking. Even the most motion-sick prone people do not experience unease.
What about spinning?
We find that there are 2 groups of people in the world - those who like spinning, and those who do not. Kids and young people LOVE to spin the zome - so much so that we sell high quality frictionless swivels. Most adults (ourselves included) do not like the spinning and do not install the swivel. We recommend to not use a swivel, however, if you anticipate lots of zome use by young kids, then the swivel will greatly reduce wear and tear on the rigging and zome and should be used.
Are they for indoors or outdoors?
Both. Though zomes are more commonly installed outdoors, they are also hung inside. They require an overhead anchor at least an 7'-6" off the ground.
How are they shipped? Are they difficult to assemble?
Zomes are shipped "knock-down" via common carriers such as FedEX Freight. There are 2 main steps needed to install a Kodama Zome. 1) An overhead anchor is required to properly hang the zome. This overhead anchor can be a suitable tree branch, grouping of trees, overhead beam, reinforced ceiling, or Kodama Zomes stand. Most anchors are set by our customers. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with setting the overhead anchor, we recommend working with a licensed contractor or arborist for each unique installation. We are happy to answer any questions you have about this step - be sure to see out our Hanging Kits, or Contact Us. 2) Once the anchor is set, the zome itself requires no tools to assemble and usually takes 2 people approximately 1 or 2 hours. Additionally, assembly instructions and videos come with each zome. Though most commonly set in one place, they can also be taken down and moved as needed.
Are they safe for children?
Yes, and children love them. Though they are meant for lounging and relaxing, they are plenty strong to handle a bit of kid rough-housing. Of course care should be taken to teach children the difference between use and abuse, and young children should not be left unsupervised until you are comfortable with their understanding of safe behavior and limits. The zome is not a crib and toddlers should never be left alone. Basically, the same common sense rules apply for this as anything else.
Can I leave it out in the rain?
Yes, not a problem. All hardware is marine grade 316 stainless steel, the frame is double coated powdercoated steel, and the webbing is mildew and UV resistant polyester. The mattress and cushions are upholstered with water and fade resistant Sunbrella® fabric. It can handle weather, but to extend the life, it is recommended to cover or remove during periods of extended weather. Over time, exposure to sun, rain, and snow do take their toll, as with anything left outdoors for extended periods. If you plan to leave the zome outdoors year round, we recommend one of our covers, not only to protect your investment, but also so you can use the zome in any weather.
